I came to AIR in mid January as an intern from UH's Graduate College of Social Work. It was the first time I had been out of the classroom since starting my graduate program. It was my first time being in the “field”, as they call it.

As I was reading How Al-Anon Works for Families and Friends of Alcoholics, this sentence, which touches on the similarities among members of a program, really stuck out to me. It is often used in the closing of Al-Anon meetings as a reminder that we are not alone. These words come from the chapter which discusses stepping out of isolation and reaching out to other members of a program.

November 2007

I have been trying to think of a word to describe my first few weeks of working at AIR, and the one that keeps coming to mind is 'amazing'. I really did not know what to expect coming to work here and to be honest, I was a little scared. But as I came to more groups and began meeting and getting to know some of the families, I realized that this was a place that really makes a difference in people's lives.

My dad told me that since I was the oldest of 6 kids we were one year apart, too). I MUST be the good example and if I was bad they would be and if I was good they would be. I tried to be perfect so they would love and accept me. So, I became a "Super Human Doing" to "survive" as best I knew how.

Since then, we've learned to "talk the talk" of recovery, and are even beginning to "walk the walk" of the 12 Steps. What was foreign at first now brings us comfort and hope. We now understand that we have found not just a substance abuse program, but a compassionate group of like-minded individuals who care for us and our children as they do their own families - the AIR Community.

June 2007 - Saying goodbye...in a good way.

Let’s just say that I’m sad. Sad to be leaving so many relationships and wonderful people. Sad to leave an amazing staff filled with people who have incredible gifts. Sad to leave a community of people committed to working on issues- sad. There are many things I will miss about the individuals of this community.

The New Year can represent different things for so many, but for a majority of us, it’s about evaluating our lives and letting go of behaviors, which work against us instead of for us. It’s about making a conscious commitment toward continued participation in behaviors that bring about positive consequences in our lives and letting go of behaviors, which produce undesirable outcomes.
